On May 13th, Zion National Park will begin the first phase of opening up portions of the park to visitors. The gorgeous views, fresh air, and spring vibes are extra strong, and we know your enthusiasm to return is, too. That’s why we wanted to take a minute to remind you of Leave No Trace Best Practices, and how you can do your part to take care of Zion’s beautiful landscape.

The good news is that Zion’s towering walls and stunning vistas are ready and waiting for your adoration and exploration. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that the park’s phased reopening means a new normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Our best advice? Adjust your expectations and find new ways to enjoy Zion National Park responsibly.

Leave No Trace

What a beautiful state we live in! Let’s take care of Zion (and in turn, she’ll continue to be there for us). Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re no doubt aware of the throngs of people flocking to Utah’s stunning state parks these past weeks, and the unfortunate littering of these beautiful outdoor spaces. There’s never been a more important time to be reminded of Leave No Trace principles and best practices:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impact
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

At Zion Ponderosa, we use these principles to promote responsible outdoor recreation and to build awareness, appreciation and respect for our spectacular public lands. We also encourage visitors to follow Leave No Trace social media guidelines:

  1. Tag thoughtfully
  2. Be mindful of what your images portray
  3. Give back to the places you love
  4. Encourage and inspire LNT in social media posts

Maintain Social Distancing

Observation Point- Zion National Park

Some of the most popular trails in Zion National Park, such as Angels Landing, present incredible challenges when it comes to social distancing. Trails such as these are likely to remain closed for the foreseeable future for the health and safety of park visitors. The Zion Canyon shuttle service will also remain at a halt for now. This means visitor access will be limited to available parking, according to the Zion NPS website. Visit the NPS website for up-to-the-minute details about Zion National Park reopening.

We encourage you to explore and enjoy less crowded trails, such as Observation Point and Cable Mountain, during the phased reopening of Zion. Both of these trails, and more, are easily accessible to Zion Ponderosa guests. Guided hikes, canyoneering adventures and Jeep tours are a great way to get your adventure fix while exploring Zion responsibly.
