Fall Adventures in Zion—When, Where and How to Experience Zion’s Best

Fall in Zion National Park and the surrounding East Zion area is a magical time, with vibrant colors and cooler temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures. Fall foliage typically begins to change from mid-September and extends through November, with each week offering new ways to experience the autumn beauty. Whether you’re hiking, taking a scenic Jeep tour, or exploring the nearby slot canyons, fall adventures in Zion are an unforgettable experience.
Let’s break down leaf-peeping season*:
Early September: Highest elevations (8,000’ to 10,000’) may begin to show some color change but most foliage remains green.
Mid-September: Trees at high elevations begin to change color.
Late September: Beginning of peak season.
Early October: Fall colors peak on the Zion National Park plateau (6,500’) and at Zion Ponderosa.
Mid-October: Higher elevations are past their peak but colors still abound at middle to lower elevations (4,000’ or lower) such as in main Zion Canyon.
Late October/Early November: Cottonwood trees in Zion Canyon may still have yellow leaves.
*Fall colors and conditions vary year to year, this is our best estimate based on previous years.
Now for more details about each season—and tips for adventuring Zion in fall:
September: Early Hints of Color at Higher Elevations
Starting in September, the highest elevations of the Zion region—around 8,000 to 10,000 feet—begin showing hints of fall color. While most trees are still green, you may spot the first golden hues. For the best early-season views, consider a hike to Observation Point, where you can marvel at the panoramic vistas from above Zion National Park.
Even at lower elevations, the weather is great this time of year for horseback riding. The White Mountain Horseback Ride combines the best of fall color viewing with the excitement of slot canyon exploration. This one-hour guided tour includes 15 minutes of instruction and 45 minutes of saddle time and canyon adventure. Book here.
October: Peak Colors at Zion Ponderosa
As October rolls in, the colors reach their peak on Zion National Park’s plateau, and Zion Ponderosa itself becomes a hub of fall beauty. By mid-October, the leaves in Zion Canyon at around 4,000 feet are also in full splendor, with cottonwood trees lining the Virgin River in rich golden hues.
If there’s one East Zion adventure you should experience this October, it’s the Brushy Cove Jeep Tour. The colors are stunning on this scenic off-road adventure. Book this Jeep tour for early to mid-October to catch the fall foliage at its prime. Book now.
Late October to Early November: Lower Elevations
As higher elevations shed their leaves, lower regions of Zion and East Zion continue to shine depending on weather. In late October, Zion Canyon is still alive with color, and the cottonwoods may even keep their golden leaves into early November.
Hiking inside Zion National Park is a great option this time of year, especially on more popular trails if they’re dry.
