Each year, Zion National Park and the surrounding East Zion area draw adventurers from all over the world. From Zion’s iconic sandstone landscape carved by the Virgin River to East Zion’s scenic views and slot canyons, the area offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking adventure and natural beauty. But with growing popularity comes the increased responsibility to leave no trace in order to protect the landscapes that make this region so special.

Zion Ponderosa  has long been committed to preserving the untouched beauty of this land. When Grandpa Ray Lewis first set eyes on the land where the ranch resort now sits, he recognized something special—an untouched corner of Zion that had the power to bring families and friends together while inspiring a love and respect for the outdoors.

That vision has been carried through decades by Grandpa Ray’s family, who have been stewards of the land ever since—and at Zion Ponderosa  it’s that same sense of responsibility that drives us today. Whether you’re hiking in Zion National Park, exploring East Zion’s hidden gems on a guided Jeep or horseback tour, or simply kicking back and relaxing in a vacation home or cabin, following the Leave No Trace principles helps protect Zion for generations to come.

The 7 Leave No Trace Principles

  • Plan Ahead and Prepare: Research trail conditions and permits before you go. If you can’t get a permit, join a guided hike with East Zion Adventures.
  • Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: Stick to trails and campsites to protect the delicate ecosystem.
  • Dispose of Waste Properly: Pack out everything you bring—including trash, food wrappers, and even toilet paper.
  • Leave What You Find: Avoid taking souvenirs like rocks or wildflowers—disturbing the natural environment is illegal in Zion National Park.
  • Minimize Campfire Impact: Opt for a camp stove over a fire, and follow fire restrictions. Be sure to join us around one of our designated campfire areas for s’mores!
  • Respect Wildlife: Keep your distance from animals, store food safely, and never feed them.
  • Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Keep noise levels low and respect others on the trail.

4 Leave No Trace Principles for Social Media

Social media can inspire others to explore the outdoors, but it’s important to share responsibly. Geotagging hidden spots, glamorizing risky behavior, or posting photos that don’t follow Leave No Trace principles can unintentionally cause harm. Be mindful of what you post, and use your platform to promote sustainable practices, encourage responsible recreation, and support conservation efforts.

Eco-Friendly Travel Tips

To make your adventure in Zion National Park more eco-friendly, bring a refillable water bottle and use the water fill stations available throughout Zion National Park. Use the mandatory shuttle service when exploring Zion Canyon, or take advantage of East Zion Adventures’ shuttle to Zion’s Visitor Center. As always, stick to designated trails and roads to minimize your environmental impact.

Maximize your Zion getaway—and minimize your impact—by enjoying the incredible on-property amenities right here at Zion Ponderosa. From our two-tiered pool and hot tub to tennis, pickleball, and more, there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the resort. When you’re ready to explore beyond the property, check in with our recreation desk. East Zion Adventures offers guided hikes, Jeep tours, and canyoneering experiences that are designed to protect the land while helping you experience its beauty up close.
