On October 14, 2023, North America will be graced with a celestial spectacle—the annular solar eclipse. Also known as the “ring of fire,” this mesmerizing event occurs when the moon partially covers the sun, creating a breathtaking halo of light around its edges.

We’ll have about 90% visibility right here at Zion Ponderosa, and are within a two-hour drive of locations predicted to have 100% visibility. With this in mind, we’ve put together a Solar Eclipse Package including a stargazing tour and sunset Jeep adventure for those traveling to Utah to see this rare phenomena. Read on to learn more about the eclipse, viewing safety tips, and what to expect!

Annular solar eclipse—what to expect

The annular solar eclipse will occur from 9:08 to 11:56 a.m. MDT. What can you expect? Well, during an annular solar eclipse, the moon moves between the sun and Earth when it is at its farthest point from our planet. As a result, the moon appears smaller than the sun and doesn’t fully block it, resulting in a brilliant halo around the moon popularly known as the “ring of fire.”  While it won’t completely darken the surroundings as seen in a total solar eclipse, you can anticipate a noticeable dimming of the sky.

Eclipse viewing safety

Safety during this event is of utmost importance. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause severe harm to your eyes. Make sure to use certified solar viewing glasses to witness this celestial wonder safely, as regular sunglasses won’t provide adequate protection. Solar binoculars can enhance your viewing experience of Baily’s Beads, the sparkling points of sunlight as the Moon’s edge moves across the Sun.
