Fall is just about here and there’s no better time to plan your Zion National Park visit! September offers ideal off-season conditions—fewer crowds, cooler weather, and stunning fall colors. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Zion has it all for the perfect September getaway.

First things first: let’s talk about fall colors. Zion’s elevation ranges from 3,600 to 8,700 feet, which means when the leaves change depends on the elevation. Here’s what you can typically expect in September:

  • Early September: At the highest elevations (above 8,000 feet), you may start to see some early color changes, but most trees will still be green.
  • Mid-September: Trees at high elevations begin to change color.
  • Late September: Beginning of peak fall foliage season.

If you’re planning a trip to Zion Ponderosa this fall, here are some must-do experiences that showcase the beauty and adventure of the season:

Pa’rus Trail is an easy, accessible trail ideal for families or anyone wanting a relaxed walk with views of the Virgin River. It’s also a better time of year to try to score a permit for hiking Angels Landing. If you didn’t apply in time or don’t get one, you can hike this iconic Zion National Park landmark with one of our East Zion Adventures guides. Alternatively, consider hiking to Observation Point, easily accessible from Zion Ponderosa property.
